Our workshops are back in full swing at Flowers of the World! We had a great time with all of our guests on Tuesday night at our “Fall Flowers” themed-workshop.  Many Gilt City guests joined us for the first of our Fall 2011 series. Sara, our GM, and our talented team of designers taught guests how to create their own fall floral design masterpieces. We worked with seasonal favorites such as Brassica and Amaryllis, as well as FOTW faves, such as Pincushion Protea, Calla Lilies, and Hydrangea in deep rich autumnal hues.

Our next workshop is a Level II, for more advanced guests, on Tuesday, November 8, from 6:30pm-8:30pm at our 110 Maiden Lane Studio.

In our second round of exclusive Gilt City workshops, this past Tuesday, twenty-five eager guests came to Flowers of the World’s downtown studio to learn how to create their own breathtaking summer arrangements. Sara and Andrea taught our guests how to work with vibrant summery shades, tropical leaves and even exotic ginger sticks. Guests learned how to process and condition their blooms to maintain their quality and lifespan and our talented workshop helpers Lauren and Colin assisted guests throughout the design process.

Of course, Rebecca, from Ron Ben-Israel Cakes, spoiled us by bringing a Peach cobbler cake with alternating layers of Cinnamon Pecan & Vanilla Bean Buttercreams decorated with the most gorgeous sugar flowers in honor of our workshop.

We had so much fun at last night’s Flower Workshop, Fashion-Forward Floral Design. Twenty plus guests learned some of the secrets of the floral design trade in selecting flowers, processing/conditioning and caring for floral arrangements. Sara and Shane, who led the workshop, taught the guests to incorporate this season’s hottest fashion trends into their designs while designers, Christina and Jacob, helped on the floor. The sweetest treat of the evening was from our good friend, Rebecca, from Ron Ben-Israel Cakes who brought scrumptious candy bar flavored mini cake bites for all to enjoy!

During this week’s Flower Workshop, “Spring Blooms,” our guests learned the tips and tricks of our trade to create their own spring-inspired floral designs. Guests were guided by our GM, Sara and Designer, Jacob, and worked with an with an array of hydrangea, calla lilies, orchids, roses, and of course super-springy tulips and hyacinths to create their own works of art. It was a fun night and each “designers’” masterpiece was definitely inspired by their unique personality. Check out some of the pictures of our workshop and please join us for our next one!   Email Courtney@flowersoftheworld.com for more information and workshop details.

Going Dutch, Part 2

Flowers of the World’s trip continues in Holland, where the company’s co-owner Peter Grontas, and general manager Sara Cancellaro, are exploring new and unique flowers to bring back to our stores. After uncovering the gorgeous Red Naomi rose earlier this week, and checking out the Fleura and Metz warehouses, Peter and Sara visited Hilverda de Boer, where many of FOTW’s gorgeous flowers originate. In fact, these buckets of hydrangea are actually headed for our 55th Street store!

Hilverda de Boer’s Marco and Sander (pictured with Sara below) played the part of gracious hosts, showing off a variety of spectacular flowers, including the large Coco Grande hypericum Peter is examining in this photo.

Calla lilies and peonies are some of our favorite blooms to design with, and these Mango and Auckland calla varieties, as well as this lush salmon peony, are stunning.
And check out the exotic pink-and-white curcuma (aptly nicknamed “Candy Stripe”), pictured below. Equally as dramatic are the long-stemmed allium siculumm with its bell-shaped flowers.
Unfortunately, the unique green plants below can’t travel into the U.S., so these photos will have to do!
Thanks to all of Flowers of the World’s amazing friends in Holland for hosting our family. See you next time!
