Our downtown store, at 110 Maiden Lane, is just a few blocks away from Chinatown, one of New York City’s richest cultural neighborhoods for food, music and shopping. The Chinese New Year began last Sunday, but the festivities continue for 15 days, giving us ample time to appreciate the beautiful blooms associated with the holiday, including Plum Blossoms and Water Narcissus.
Water Narcissus, a small, white flower, otherwise known as a daffodil, comes into season in mid-February. It is said that if the narcissus blossoms on the exact day of the Chinese New Year, good fortune will find you for the next 12 months.
Plum Blossoms, meanwhile, signify courage and hope. The flowers bloom in mid-winter, often from a branch that seemed barren just weeks prior. Plum blossoms can be found throughout Chinese art, and this week, can be found at Flowers of the World, where our designers are honoring the Chinese New Year with some beautiful arrangements involving Plum Blossoms.
We encourage you to visit us this week and pick up a branch of Plum Blossoms, then make your way up to Chinatown to join in the New Year’s festivities! The legendary Chinatown Chinese New Year Parade, including a Lion and Dragon performance, takes place on Sunday Feb. 21 at 1pm on Mott and Hester Street. Happy New Year!
